Major Upgrades Coming to Butler Street
PennDOT Enhances Safety and Accessibility with New Shared-Use Path
Exciting news for Morningside! PennDOT is set to undertake significant upgrades to Butler Street, stretching from the Fleming (62nd Street) Bridge to One Wild Place. The project will involve repaving, enhancing the bridge intersection, and laying the groundwork for future enhancements in conjunction with the Allegheny River Green Boulevard Project. This includes plans to build a dedicated shared-use path to replace the existing narrow sidewalk along the river side of Butler Street.
These developments promise improved safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists traveling to Lawrenceville, Etna, and beyond. Morningside neighbors have long advocated for better pedestrian connections to Butler Street, highlighting issues like discontinuous sidewalks leading to the Zoo and both ends of Baker Street.
It's important to note that while Butler Street is maintained by the state, Baker Street is a city-maintained road. Therefore, any improvements to Baker Street would need to be considered separately and could depend on the success of our advocacy efforts.
